incoloy 802镍合金的耐蚀性部分地归因于镍固有的活动性低与铁，正如测的的它的yang化电位在电动势emf序列中比铁高得多。与不锈钢类似，含铬镍合金具有钝化能力即自发的形成一层chao薄的但附着力很强的表面yang化物，这层yang化物起着有效阻止腐蚀的作用。镍的优点是能够与大量的合金元素结合而不形成脆性相。通常为提高耐腐蚀性，合金化添加元素是cr、mo、cu等。
